What is SharePoint ?



When you start learning SharePoint, you need to know what is SharePoint?.

When you search "What is SharePoint" in the internet you will get various answers. The below one is from the Microsoft website.

"Microsoft SharePoint 2010 makes it easier for people to work together.Using SharePoint 2010, your people can set up Web sites to share information with others, manage documents from start to finish, and publish reports to help everyone make better decisions". - Microsoft about SharePoint 2010.



If you read the above definition then you can be easily understood what is SharePoint.

It basically says "easier for people to work together".

You might have read or heard that Microsoft SharePoint is an enterprise collaboration platform that has been developed by Microsoft.

What is an enterprise collaboration?. This is nothing but people to work together in an organization, nice loved it. It's as simple as that.

SharePoint provides the solutions for various business requirements or problems of your organization.

I will give one sample example here, let's say you want to apply for a leave  and that need be approved by your supervisor and that needs to be done through the internal site. In SharePoint you will use workflow feature and you can implement that functionality. Once you submit the leave request form from the site, your supervisor receives the email, he will click on the link from an email which he received and approve the workflow of the site created using SharePoint product, an email will sent to you saying that you leave request has been approved.

SharePoint site data will get stored in the database, so if your organization wants to generate the reports they can do that. This is the most organized way of maintaining activities performed by employees in the organization.

The above example is very basic solution for one of the common business requirements.

People think that SharePoint is a software but it's more than that. You will come to know soon as you learn more about it.


List of SharePoint versions Released till date :

Till date we have five versions of SharePoint released by Microsoft.

  1. SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) in 2001.
  2. SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (SPS 2003) in 2003.
  3. Microsoft office SharePoint server 2007 (MOSS 2007) in 2007.
  4. SharePoint 2010 in 2010.
  5. SharePoint 2013 in 2012.

Since the first release of SharePoint SPS to till date i.e. SharePoint 2013 there are so many improvements. 

There are so many features likes

  • SharePoint Apps.
  • Enterprise content management(ECM).
  • Accessing and making changes to external content.
  • Enterprise Search.
  • Social features.
  • ..........
