In this course, we are going to learn various fundamentals of SharePoint. Before we learn various fundamentals, let's learn about SharePoint.

What is SharePoint? SharePoint is used to build intranets or in general does websites that you could use within your organization or even sometimes the public facing sites. And within that, you can organize the documents that will be uploaded by the users where users can store the documents as well. And once you have a lot of content... So you have one of the main features of SharePoint is search, so using search you can discover the information that is being stored by the users or added by users. Then you'll need to control all these things by managing the information, so you will have administrators for each site, collection sites, that you are going to build. So we are going to discuss what is site collection, what is a site in future videos.

In one sentence, SharePoint is a platform where you can build websites. For various people SharePoint will be a different one. So for some of them it's just the collaboration platforms, for some of them it's used to store documents, for some of them it is just building workflows, but SharePoint will be helpful in many ways. That's why we call it as a platform; it's not just an application, and it can solve the wide variety of business problems for different operations. It's not just an application like Excel or Word, but you can use SharePoint to integrate with Outlook working with those Excel documents, PowerPoint, integration with project files, visio files. So all those things can be utilized within SharePoint. So if you look at this simple application or a website that has been built using SharePoint, so it's a simple site, so the SharePoint will be used to create this kind of websites. If you use other platforms or any other technology, if you want to build it, you are going to take a lot of time to make this, but if you use SharePoint you can just use one of the predefined templates that you could use to create the site, and these sites can build within few minutes. And to store, manage and organize those documents you have document libraries where you could store the documents.

Even you have something called list where you could store information, which is similar to your Excel file. We're going to talk about lists and libraries in the future lesson. And once you have all this information, after a month or so or even after a year, you want to find that information and make it easy for your users; that's where you use to search. It helps to discover the information that is being stored by users.

In a nutshell, SharePoint is a platform that can be used to build the websites where users can store the information, and manage that information and finally they can find the relevant information that they are looking.
